The Festival of Lights did indeed continue for a full week. Although I tried to basically keep to my old schedule, I found that my nights were later and my mornings slower for the three days or so after we came back from our sojourn.

We made our report to the Varglade Council the day after we arrived back. The news that Ilya, Helki, Kea, and I had gathered about the fortifications was met with a thoughtful silence. It was, I was fairly certain, a silence that was made a little more thoughtful by the collection of hangovers being dealt with around the circle.

Though most were hiding them, or had at least summoned the mental fortitude to deal with them for the time being, some were not coping so well. Simone, for one, was slumped in her chair, and wincing at any word that was spoken above a whisper.

At this meeting, where the herbal tea flowed like the fortified wine was flowing down in the village, we filled everyone in on the lay of the land, the things we had noticed about the structure, the possible aspects of the geography that might trip us up, ways we might get in and out, and laid out a few ideas as to how we might draw the Ogre King into an open battle.

“For that is the best course of action open to us,” Ilya said. “Having seen the potential field of battle with my own eyes, I do not think there is much to be gained by marching to within bowshot of the walls of the burg.”

“What do you propose?” Lilah asked, a slight frown on her usually smooth face.

“We must try and bait the Ogre King, chip away at his colossal ego until he comes out onto the plain to fight with us sword to sword. Once we have drawn him out, it might be that these new siege engines that Jake Walker has devised and sketched might give us the edge we need.”

“Speaking of these siege weapons,” Nelri said, “do you have any clearer idea as to what we will need, Jake?”

I nodded. I had been giving that a lot of thought.

“Catapults, ballistae, battering rams, towers, and trebuchets are all going to be of use to us, I think,” I said. “Most of you have seen the sketches I have drawn up and are familiar with the idea of the weapons, right?”

There was a chorus of agreement around the table.

“They’re dangerous and helpful as they are,” I said, “but I was hoping that we could imbue them with different kinds of magic to make them even more devastating.”

“Ooooh,” Rosa said, clapping her hands delightedly, “that sounds like fun. I know the wild elves would love to help with anything concerning devastation wrought on ogres. Can you give us an example, Jake, so that me and my sister,” and she gave Simone a dig in the shin with her foot to wake her up from the gentle doze she slid into, “can get our minds spinning in a way that might help you.
